Rati Beauty: The journey so far…

Hey all,

We are going to complete two months of Rati Beauty. It’s been a hell of an emotional roller coaster, with loads of work, tons of users, myriad problems to be solved, and hours of discussion about the app and the future path that it needs to take. The last time we were this excited was maybe when we started IMBB itself. 🙂

First of all, I would really want to thank all our Rati Beauty app subscribers, more than a thousand strong now. And I would like to thank them specifically for two things. First, they were the first ones to support us. When we decided to do a paid app, I first pitched the idea in my IIT batch whatsapp group (many of my batchmates are venture capitalists themselves). Nearly all of them told me- with their vast experience- ki “India mein paid app nahin chalega” and I kept telling them “you don’t know IMBB and you don’t know women.” They would never understand why women need to hoard hundreds of lipsticks when they only use two or three. Before running IMBB, I also didn’t know! And the first day when our app launched, we had more than hundred subscribers on day one. I’m not a hugger but I really felt like hugging all these people who trusted and supported us and proved my ‘intelligent bhai log’ wrong. So, a BIG thank you to all of you. Second thing, I want to thank our Rati Beauty subscribers is for being SoOoOOOoo niceeee. We had so many troubles when we launched; from bugs such as sound not coming in videos to payment issues. But our #ratibeautyarmy was so patient with us. Nobody complained. Nobody even raised a voice or said anything adverse! We were so embarrassed with these glitches at one point that had these guys (our lovely app users) been in Delhi, we would have called them up for a dinner and apologized 😛 But everyone was really supportive. And gradually we smoothed out the problems. We are still fixing one problem or the other continuously, but decency and patience of women on “RatiBeauty” is heart warming. So thank you girls for that also. 🙂

I am going to share two images here; different snapshots in time.

The first image is for those who are new to the app or are going to join later. This was our giveaway to thank our Rati Beauty app subscribers. Although we’ll be doing them often, this one was special. Reading those 240+ comments really brought tears and smiles to us. Do go through these stories on this giveaway post (shown in the first image). These stories will give you strength and hope in life. We love reading them again and again. 🙂

The second image is for our app subscribers. To tell you how lucky you guys are. Rati Beauty almost didn’t happen. We did not start with the idea of an app initially. This image is from Rati’s makeup batch in London where she trained for two-and-half months. For the past three years, while Rati was training extensively in makeup in India and abroad, our idea was to start a makeup school, one-of-a-kind in India. We went from one country to another so that Rati could learn everything in makeup that there was! But last year, after her training in Paris was over, we were sitting idle in a park near Champs-Élysées – enjoying the sun and discussing about life and we realized that we did not want to be tied down yet. We wanted to travel and we did not want to start an office which would require our constant presence. Also, Rati wanted to keep travelling and keep learning makeup. So, after spending so much time, effort and money, our business idea collapsed because we could not let go of our freedom. Even the website for our business was ready to launch. “So what would you do with so much that you have learned?” I asked Rati. “Let’s do an app” she said. “well…” I thought aloud and there we started. We could always do a makeup school later on if we decide to settle down. 🙂

And now that we have started, we are not going to stop! There’s a lot more coming on “Rati Beauty” this year, a state-of-the-art swatch gallery and some very exciting features. Wait for it.

Rati is pouring all her knowledge and heart in her videos. It is really awesome to see how she is growing and becoming more and more comfortable in videos. In our initial video, biwi used to be nervous to begin, so I had to clap loudly with my hands and then she would start. 😛 But now, all I have to do is to set up the camera and lights, tell Rati to ‘do her thing’ and disappear from the room. Hope you guys are enjoying her videos. 🙂

We are also going to bring more and more talented people on Rati Beauty such as Sam (Samruddhi) and Chayanti. We met Sam when she was training in Paris. She is currently doing makeup in Bollywood movies and TV ads. Don’t be deceived by her teenager looks. 🙂 She started training in hair and makeup from her school days. And you all know our very own Chayanti; she keeps trying hairstyles and DIYs at home and college. We found about it later and invited her to be a part of RB.

In the end, a big thank you to our IMBB Team and our writers- Jomolji, Shikha, Saloni, Madhur, and everyone else. Jomolji has been a pillar of strength. While Rati and I have been moving around the world from one makeup school to another, she has handled IMBB like a true CEO. And under her, our team has supported us through all good and bad on IMBB. We have one of the most hardworking and passionate team ever. Rati Beauty would not have been possible without their support. Our writers are a very diverse lot with very different temperaments, but they all have one thing in common- they all love makeup and every time they visit a makeup store they are all thinking the same thing; “what has not been reviewed already?” 🙂

From all of you and us – Godspeed to Rati Beauty 😛
